master plans
United Nations
Strengthening the Security of the United Nations involved a thorough assessment of perimeter and internal access conditions, with redesign of perimeter fencing and plantings and redesign of vehicular and pedestrian security infrastructure.
RIDGEWOOD RESERVOIR TRAIL
MKM Landscape Architecture was selected by NYC Parks to prepare a master plan and contract documents for the development of a new 50 acre park on the site of a historic former reservoir in the Ridgewood section of Queens, New York. The original reservoir, consisting of three large basins, was constructed in 1858 and associated infrastructure such as pump house buildings, historic fencing, gate valves and granite sluice structures still remain largely intact. Each basin contains a diverse group of ecological habitats that have developed since the reservoir was decommissioned in the 1980’s.
The vision for Ridgewood Reservoir is to create a dynamic, sustainable park that will preserve, restore and enhance the site’s rich historical features and unique ecology while providing recreational, social and educational opportunities for visitors.
ROOSEVELT ISLAND - SOUTHPOINT PARK
Through site analysis, community interviews and a vision to create a dynamic park that resonates with the spectacular island site, its landmark ruins structures and distinctive landforms, MKM with The Trust for Public Land developed an award-winning conceptual master plan for Roosevelt Island. The plan was derived from the goals and principles set by the Advisory Council, existing site conditions and Roosevelt Island’s unique heritage. The plan developed its strength from the diversity of accessible habitats from open meadows, shoreline nesting sites to streams and waterfalls through planted woodlands. The Park design capitalizes on the existing topographical land formations; it restores a native landscape palette to the site and provides the visitors with controlled access to these rich habitats; and responsively incorporates Louis Kahn’s bold landscapes and site specific environmental art for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.
